At the time of this writing the Kotlikoff-Leamer ticket has ballot access to 323 electoral votes in 30 states. That is well over the minimum requirement of 270 electoral votes, making your vote the only thing standing between Laurence Kotlikoff and Edward Leamer’s bid for the White House.

As independents Laurence Kotlikoff and Edward Leamer don’t have an official party platform, however they do elaborate their stance on a list of important issues:

Banking and financial regulation

  • Favors instituting the detailed plan Limited Purpose Banking (also known as the Purple Financial Plan) to prevent future financial crashes; this will significantly reduce banking leverage and opacity
  • Opposes the current policy of quantitative easing
  • Favors an independent Federal Reserve
  • Opposes Dodd-Frank on the grounds that it increases bureaucracy and helps large banks because they are the only ones that can afford the compliance costs
  • Favors eliminating financial regulators due to built in safeguards in Limited Purpose Banking
  • Limited Purpose Banking would automatically break up big banks


  • Improve national education performance
  • Favors restoring more state control over education
  • Does not favor abolishing the Department of Education
  • Improve vocational education
  • Proposes using technology to lower classroom size and improve the quality of teaching
  • Favors encouraging online education led by the US Department of Education as well as subsidies to make this available to students
  • Proposes funding Saturday morning parent education classes across the nation to teach parenting skills with the goal of improving early childhood learning
  • Favors federal subsidies to enable smaller classrooms
  • Favors paying teachers more and expecting a higher level of competence and achievement
  • Proposes a federal program that would pay for a teaching aid to be put in every classroom of low-income schools
  • Increase subsidies for child care
  • Invest in childhood development starting from birth
  • Proposes student loans for college be tied with the 30-year Treasury bond rate (currently 2.6 percent), with an increase of one percent for those who don’t finish school
  • Favors allowing current student loan holders to refinance to the 30-year Treasury bond rate
  • Favors limiting student loan repayment to 10 percent of one’s salary, having deferral during times of unemployment, military service, federal service, and total forgiveness after 30 years

Social issues

  • States that the only way persistent institutionalized racism will change in the US is through education
  • Favors establishing a United States Slavery Museum in DC
  • Supports the Supreme Court’s decision legalizing gay marriage throughout the county
  • Favors state control and decision over recreational and medical marijuana
  • Favors legalization of personal use of drugs and medical treatment for users, however the sale or distribution of illegal drugs should be a crime
  • Favors reducing rates of incarceration

Abortion and family planning

  • Supports a woman’s legal right to an abortion
  • Favors investing in, and encouraging, family planning


  • Pledges to work with the NRA to establish a policy that does not infringe on the Second Amendment and also reduces gun violence
  • Favors gun permits preceded by background checks

  • Prosecute gun dealers who fail to make adequate background checks

Healthcare, retirement, and other entitlement programs

  • Proposes replacing food stamps with three free meals for children at their school and direct food allotment from food distribution centers
  • Calls for eliminating the ceiling on Social Security benefits
  • Has a detailed plan to reform Social Security using Personal Security Accounts
  • Has a detailed Purple Healthcare Plan that involves vouchers
  • Favors providing basic health insurance to all Americans free of charge
  • Favors allowing all Americans to purchase supplemental coverage from their health insurance provider
  • Basic health insurance should be privately provided with people free to choose doctors and hospitals within an insurance company’s network
  • Cap federal healthcare costs based on long-term projections
  • Basic health insurance system should provide incentives for healthy living and to prevent overuse of healthcare services
  • Favors medical malpractice reform to limit the cost of defensive medicine
  • Veterans will have the same healthcare as everyone else

Foreign policy

  • Would make an ultimatum to North Korea that no more nuclear tests, nor missile launches of any kind, can take place
  • Favors pursuing the Iran nuclear deal
  • Favors halting Iran’s development of long-range missiles
  • Favors hitting ISIS hard and then withdrawing, not treating it as a US primary responsibility
  • Opposes becoming trapped in a prolonged ground war in the Middle East or Afghanistan
  • States the primary actors against ISIS should be Turkey, Saudi Arabia, and other Gulf States
  • Favors allowing real wages to fall to make hiring competitive in struggling EU countries
  • Favors Limited Purpose Banking for the EU
  • Would reach a deal with Russia that Ukraine will not join NATO in exchange for a halt to Russian interference in Ukraine
  • States that the US must prepare for India and China’s long term economic ascendancy
  • Would make a deal with China that shares the South China sea with its many claimants
  • Would encourage China to put pressure on North Korea to give up its nuclear weapons
  • Proposes an embargo against China if it continues unilateral expansion of land masses in the South China Sea
  • Strong supporter of Israel
  • Does not favor telling Israel how to defend itself
  • Believes a successful Israel-Palestine peach deal would include a demilitarized Palestinian state, share Jerusalem as its capital, and ensure Israel’s security
  • Favors adopting policies that would encourage global population reduction, and using the World Bank to help implement this
